Camping in Colorado

I thought it would be fun to post our favorite camping areas in Colorado. We live in a beautiful state and we love camping here. We started camping in a tent and then we went to a Coleman pop-up camper. We are now using a Trailmanor hard sided pop up camper - I love it! We use www.reserveamerica.com to make reservations in some spots and we also have the book, Colorado Campgrounds: The 100 Best and All the Rest . We normally do not use the camp grounds in the book as they are geared more towards areas without lots of trees. However, we do go to the areas around the recommended campgrounds and find our own favorites. :) Our favorite places are Mueller State Park, Leadville - Turquoise Lake, Salida and Silverthorne - Lake Dillon. I will post pictures as I love photography - I'm not a professional photographer but I love to take pictures of this beautiful state. My husband, Mason and I are blessed with 3 handsome young boys - our oldest, C. is 23, B. is 10 and A. is 9. B. and A. love to hike, climb trees and play in the water when we are camping. I look forward to sharing our camping experiences with those of you who live in this wonderful state and those of you who would like to come here for camping.

Hi Kathy! We're interested in finding a place to camp that isn't too high up. We tried Gunella pass last August and it would have been nice if it wasn't so cold and raining the entire trip. We've done Bear Creek Lake numerous times and really enjoyed each time (well, not the time we camped with the new-aged hippies that kept us up all night!) but we really like the amenities there. Any suggestions for a place that isn't at 10,000 feet?

We love Silverthorne - the bike trails around Lake Dillon are fabulous and close to all amenities. We always stay in Heaton Bay in the electric sites. Although Leadville is high up - in August it has been fine and it is always so quiet at Turquoise Lake - we stay at the Father Dyer campground - always private for us and Leadville has the mineral belt trail which is paved and a beautiful trail. We love to go to Salida during Fathers Day weekend every year. We stay near the river - if interested - I'll look up the name of that campground. We head in to town for two days of a fair, sitting on the river banks to watch the races and just relaxing. There is a new park that is supposed to be wonderful near Colorado Springs which we will be checking out this coming spring - I think it is called Cheyenne Mtn and it will have all the amenities. We have heard from several campers about it being built and looking wonderful. We are excited to check it out.
I would recommend the book: 100 best campgrounds in Colorado. I follow the book and then write notes in the book about our favorite campgrounds, campgrounds nearby that are not in the book, favorite restaurants and activities nearby, etc. I also pick up brochures in the towns and find out when festivities are happening and schedule another camping trip based on the festivities of the area.

We have found the weather to be iffy around April/May and towards the end of September so we try and head south during those months. My in-laws camp with us sometimes so we are planning some areas down past them this coming year - south of Pueblo West.

If you ever can go try Mueller State Park - you will not be disappointed. The cute little town of Woodland Park has every thing and Mueller is just beautiful.
